Lentils. Lentils are low in calorie and high in iron, which can help prevent anemia. Some studies have even shown that getting enough iron can make you smarter! This super food gives you lots of flavor, B vitamins, and fiber, and can help keep your blood sugar at an even level. And they are virtually fat free! Mix lentils into salads, pasta, sauces, or almost anything else you can think of “ they will absorb the flavor of your favorite dish while making it into a super food!
Potatoes. This awesome food will give you tons of energy and will also help keep your blood pressure low. One potato only has about 100 calories, and is also loaded with potassium (potassium is essential for peak muscle performance), as well as fiber and Vitamin C. This super food is also fat free. Bake one up and top it with salsa, low fat sour cream, or even a little parmesan cheese (see below.)
Avocados. Avocados have been shown to help you lose weight, especially in the belly area, due to their high levels of monounsaturated fat. This super food is also delicious and very filling, so add them to sandwiches and salads. Avocados will actually increase your body’s ability to absorb nutrients and vitamins from the other vegetables it is mixed with, making them a true super food. They are also a great source of fiber, potassium, and vitamin K.
Parmesan cheese. Parmesan cheese has a lot more calcium than cheddar and many other types of cheese. Your body needs calcium now (in your 20’s and 30’s) to prevent osteoporosis later, and you need about 1,000 mg per day. This super food will also give you the protein your body needs to maintain muscle mass, as well as keep your immune system healthy. Grate parmesan cheese over pasta, salads and sandwiches, sprinkle it over roasted vegetables, or add a few tablespoons to your favorite soup or sauce.
Whole grain pasta. The B vitamins in whole grain pasta will pack a punch when it comes to giving you energy, and unlike regular pasta it is also loaded with fiber, leaving you feeling satisfied and fuller longer.
