Madonna took home the Golden Globe Award for best original song in a motion picture for her song “Masterpiece” in W.E. (which she also directed). However, Elton John and his hubby David Furnish were not pleased about her win at all
“Madonna. Best song????… off!!!” Furnish wrote on his Facebook page after Madonna was announced as the winner of the award. Soon after, he continued with, “Madonna winning best original song truly shows how these awards have nothing to do with merit. Her acceptance speech was embarrassing in its narcissism.”
John, who was also nominated for the same award, even spoke about Madonna’s slim chances of winning on the red carpet. He told Carson Day she “doesn’t have a… chance of winning tonight.”
After her win, Madonna spoke about John’s comments backstage and said it was no sweat off her back.
“I hope he speaks to me for the next couple of years,” she said. “He’s been known to get mad at me, so I don’t know. He’s brilliant and I adore him, so he’ll win another award. I don’t feel bad!”
Madonna had been making a few enemies lately, especially with her latest comments about Lady Gaga. The Queen of Pop accused Gaga of ripping off her song “Express Yourself” in Gaga’s iconic “Born This Way.” Since John is a huge supporter of Lady Gaga, Madonna’s comments probably just threw fuel into the fire for John’s distaste for her.
The two singers first had a falling out in 2004 when John accused Madonna of lip-syncing.
