Katherine Heigl Confirms Grey’s Exit

Katherine Heigl has officially announced that she will be leaving Grey’s Anatomy in the upcoming issue of Entertainment Weekly. Earlier in the season, Heigl approached the show’s creator, Shonda Rimes, and asked to be let out of her 18-month contract and Rimes agreed.

There has been a lot of controversy over Heigl’s role in Grey’s Anatomy after the Emmy’s fiasco a couple of years back. For those who don’t remember, Heigl was nominated for an Emmy and declined her nomination, stating that her performance in the show that season hadn’t been anything special and proceeded to ultimately blame the writers.

Heigl was originally scheduled to appear in the final five episodes of Grey’s Anatomy this season, but she will no longer be reprising her role as Izzie Stevens. Her cameo appearance on January 21st will be the last glimpse fans get of her character.

While there is speculation that Heigl wants to concentrate more on her movie career (since she is a big star now, *rolls eyes*), the actress is claiming that her newfound motherhood is what has pushed this decision. Fortunately, I am not a Grey’s fan, so I have no idea how (or if for that matter) this change will affect the show.

She hasn’t really been on the show for a while now (after making a brief appearance earlier this season) and in my opinion, the show is SO much better now without her.
Her character’s desperation was annoying and I was willing to give up on the show after last season. But this season they’re focusing more on other new characters and it’s less of the depressing, whining and desperate storylines and more of the mature, funny and interesting storylines. It’s a lot more enjoyable to watch now.
    So, I’m happy she’s officially gone 🙂
