What’s Her Secret? Adriana Leon, Forward for the Canadian Women’s National Soccer Team

From June 6 to July 5, Canada will be hosting the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015 soccer championship. For an entire month, 24 teams and more than 1,000 players from around the world will gather in cities across the nation to battle it out on the soccer field to claim the coveted trophy and title of world champion.

We, of course, will be cheering for the home team and will have our eyes peeled for one lady in particular, her name is Adriana Leon. Soccer is her life and this rock star athlete has travelled all over the world for the sport; she plays forward for the Canadian Women’s National Soccer Team and is also a member of the Chicago Red Stars, a professional soccer team in the USA. She can take down her opponents with her fast feet skills on the field and has a love for fashion off the field – a lady after our own heart. Read on and learn why we’ll be chanting “Olé, olé, olé” for Adriana when the World Cup Canada begins.

As a forward for the Canadian National Women’s Soccer Team, how do you mentally and physically prepare for a major event such as the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada?

On top of soccer, I also enjoy yoga and meditation. I’ve found it helps with clearing my mind, envisioning my end goal and overcoming hurdles with a positive attitude as I prepare for tournaments such as the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada. I’ve learned that our bodies can handle so much more than what our minds think. Mental endurance is just as important as your physical endurance and so I really take the time to incorporate yoga and meditation into my training program.

What do you say to yourself or do to stay positive when faced with a challenging work-out or a challenging life experience?

One of the best training advices I’ve been given is to appreciate the process. Things don’t change overnight, so it’s important to look at the bigger picture. Part of being an athlete is having a competitive spirit and for me personally, I want to see the results and reach my goals immediately. I start with setting my goal for a better perspective on what I want to accomplish. Then I remind myself to look at the full journey, the whole process – the ups and the downs – and to enjoy it, knowing that I’ll be better for it.

Guilty pleasures, we all have one or two. What are yours?

Shopping and pizza.

Finish this sentence: I want women around the world to ___________.

Be courageous and go after their passions.

What are three things in your wardrobe you cannot live without and why?

I cannot live without my shoe game and love to mix it up day-to-day. Also, can’t live without a pair of jeans in white, black, or blue because you can easily dress them up or down. Lastly, my plain tees –there’s nothing like putting on a comfortable t-shirt with a pair of jeans, then completing my outfit with sneakers or stilettos.

If you could create a recipe for happiness, what would it contain and why?

That’s a great question. It would definitely include family, friends, and good character. First, my family and friends, without them, life wouldn’t be the same. They make everything more enjoyable and are a reminder of what’s important in life. Secondly, good character because it would make us all better people and can help get rid of all the negativity in the world.

Name one famous person (celebrity or historical figure) you would like to have a brunch with and why?

Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals. I also love playing hockey and am a huge fan of his. You can really see his passion for the sport and so I think it’d be really interesting to pick his brain about what inspires him and motivates him, as well as learning more about his training routine.
