You know what’s in for spring, but despite our lectures on the importance of 70s revival or wearing denim this season, it always helps to look to certain style icons who seem to articulate a trend best. So that’s why we’ve rounded up our go-to girls of spring 2011; the ladies who successfully boast the season’s it-pieces best, while making them their own. (Just make sure you do the same.)
Rachel Bilson
Whether it’s the ombre hair or her affinity for denim and blazers, Rachel Bilson has come a long way from her circa-O.C. bohemian self and stepped into her own in terms of fashion and trendsetting. Whether flaunting pink denim pants at a late April television appearance or mini leather shorts at a fashion event just last week, the actress successfully combines statement pieces with wardrobe staples to ensure that each suits her personality and her aesthetic. Slave to fashion does not apply.
Alexa Chung
With our appreciation for the British television presenter, no one should be surprised that Ms. Chung continues to define the seasonal landscape, as her penchant for menswear, blunt bobs and oversize t-shirts give spring 2011 trends an underground edge. Proving that you need not embrace every fashion suggestion, the TV host has successfully maintained a consistent vibe for the past couple seasons, but still combines the likes of trousers, blazers and sheer fabrics to prevent her from finding herself in a fashion rut.
Diane Kruger
Proving that class never goes out of style, Diane Kruger ventured from her vintage-inspired comfort zone to embrace some of spring’s go-to items at April’s Coachella, boasting the likes of ankle-length skirts and fedora hats, only for us to discover that she had adopted the Canadian tuxedo (denim-on-denim) a few days before. A style icon of the red carpet and of the street, the actress proves that while you can keep it casual day-to-day, just a hint of glamour (read: her striking MET ensemble) will catapult you from fashionable to fashion icon with only a few home runs.
Vanessa Hudgens
Not everyone can come back from a Disney career (not to mention that unfortunate photo situation) to steal a spot on countless best-dressed lists “ especially when in the company of countless A-listers. Bringing a new edge to casual ensembles, the High School Musical star has perfected California chic and made it accessible to the masses. Meaning? While we once thought the term was synonymous with the cast of The Hills, the actress has proven that dark colours paired with white pants, leather and even power suits are perfect for those warm evenings and nights.
