Movie Quotes to Live and Learn From

Life is not a movie. There is a reason we experience a tingly sensation after we watch “How To Lose A Guy in 10 Days” (and no, it’s not a product of Matthew McConaughey’s striking appearance). It’s because we are satisfied by the outcome, and a small, distinct part of us wishes we were just as lucky. Here is a list of some celebrated movie quotes that can help us learn a thing or two about relationships:

1. Movie: Runaway Bride
Quote: "Look, I guarantee there'll be tough times. I guarantee that at some time, one or both of us is gonna want to get out of this thing. But I also guarantee that if I don't ask you to be mine, I'll regret it for the rest of my life, because I know, in my heart, you're the only one for me."

Translation: If only we could rip these words out of Richard Gere’s mouth and throw them at our partner, praying they catch them without fumbling. But even if our man can’t express these words as effortlessly as our favourite celeb hubby (speaking realistically), it’s the context of the phrase that holds more value anyways. As we are well-aware, rough patches rear their evil heads in almost every relationship. There are moments when you want to give up, and times you chew over if it’s worth the bother.  While swearing off relationships forever may seem like a convenient solution, sometimes struggling through the rough patches can help make your bond stronger.

2. Movie: When Harry met Sally
Quote: "There are two kinds of women: high maintenance and low maintenance…You're the worst kind. You're high maintenance, but you think you're low maintenance.”

Translation: Oh, if only men were ballsy enough to say this to our face. News flash: in this day and age, women have a right to act high-maintenance; it’s called being a woman of principle. Now, not to say this means being demanding and difficult, then you’re asking for conflict. On the flip side, it’s important to have standards. Who wants to settle for second-best? Even if you tweak a menu option until it suddenly appears to be a different meal in itself, there’s a guy out there who will admire your persistence.

 3.  Movie: The Big Chill
Quote: "They're either married or gay. And if they're not gay, they've just broken up with the most wonderful woman in the world.”

Translation: At times, this phrase could not seem any closer to the truth. Yet when a seemingly perfect, single man presents himself, we often wonder if that is a warning sign under disguise. Believe it or not, sometimes we just get lucky. But for those of us who have yet to find a man who makes us tremble (in more ways than one) take pleasure in being single. Men seem to have a way of picking a woman out of a crowd when they’re facing the other direction.

 4.  Movie: Sweet Home Alabama
Quote: "The truth is I gave my heart away a long time ago, my whole heart, and I never really got it back."

Translation: As if we don’t love Reese Witherspoon’s honey-coated charm enough already, her quotes certainly are “sweet”. She speaks out on behalf of many fellow sisters with this phrase. Becoming heartsick is no joke, and the thought of re-entering the battlefield of love can often seem just as nauseating. But in order to release the pain of your wound and put your heart back on the chopping block, it’s important to focus on yourself first. Once you fall in love with you again, everyone else will simply follow your lead.
