Would You Buy A Hula Hoop Bag?

Among the surprising trends of the Spring 2013 shows was the Chanel hula hoop bag — a bag that sits within two hula-hoops.

But believe it or not, it has a specific purpose.

“It’s for the beach,” said Karl Lagerfeld, following the show. “You need space for the beach towel. And then you can put it into the sand and hang things on it.”

Really, Karl? Do you think a hula hoop bag filled with towels and various other beach-themed items will fit into a car?

Either way, the Chanel bag goes hand in hand with much of Spring 2013’s quirky, retro-inspired fashions. The latest collections by Louis Vuitton and Marc Jacobs capitalized on super-’60s trends, valuing kitsch over the more sophisticated styles of this upcoming season. But that’s good! Fashion should be fun. So before you condemn the hula hoop bag, remember: if you saw it at the antique market and it was from 1963, you’d probably want to buy it (if you’re me).
