The “Mean Girls” Musical is Happening

The only way this news could've gotten better was if it was announced on a Wednesday (when we were all wearing pink): it's been confirmed that a Mean Girls musical is officially a go.

According to Tina Fey's husband, Jeff Richmond (who did the music for 30 Rock), the musical is "going along swimmingly."

"We're very happy with how things are coming along so far," he continued. "And maybe this thing will be out by the Mean Girls 15th anniversary."

THAT LONG?! …Okay, okay. It's fine. It'll be fine. Especially since taking a longer time means actual thought and care is going into it. Also, I trust Jeff and Tina. I trust them with my goddamn life. Why? Because they're not even aiming to find "big" stars — they're taking the legit Mean Girls approach all over again. (Minus Lindsay Lohan.)

"I think we really want to find interesting people no one has seen before," Richmond continued. "I don't think I can say Audra McDonald will play Cady. Hopefully we'll find a young person who, at this moment, is still in college but will be making her way to New York as we write. Still a fetus somewhere."

And don't get discouraged by the 15th anniversary mention: turns out they're also hoping to start workshopping the musical this year  — as in into the summer and fall. (So soon kind of! YES.) Either way, this thing is going to happen, which makes it the opposite of fetch even though I would describe it as fetch. I mean, DUH. (I'm a mouse.)
