Helping for Haiti

When it comes to important causes, no issue seems more pressing than the current crisis in Haiti as death tolls and damage estimates continue to rise.  So in addition to cash donations and spreading the word, what else can we do?

Well, if you’re rich, famous and Simon Cowell, there’s no better way to raise awareness than to release a power ballad (ala Heal the World) with a roster boasting chart toppers, Grammy winners and anyone else within the grasp of the industry.

Cue: Everybody Hurts.  A soon-to-be recorded/released cover of the 90s R.E.M. original which will feature the likes of Miley Cyrus, Rod Stewart, Leona Lewis (token X-Factor connection?), Mariah Carey, Michael Buble, James Morrison and James Blunt “ to name a few.  Quite the eclectic mix if I do say so myself.  (Now I know what it would feel like to attend a multi-generational and incredibly diverse music school “ and I like it.)

Sure the idea of charity single seems not so much endearing as it does a well-orchestrated publicity stunt, but when even money-driven music moguls (ex. Cowell) can spread goodwill, selflessness and the message of help to the masses, it becomes increasingly difficult to remain cynical.  There’s something encouraging about the unification of causes “ and the fact that helping Haiti is something everyone can agree on.

In the meantime?  Donate money, clothes and shoes, or pick up the compilation record slated to hit stores soon.  I mean, If Simon Cowell can do it, you can, too.
