“Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” Sequel To Happen

One of the most hotly-tipped movies of the year, questions surrounding the future of The Girl With the Dragon were plentiful after the film failed to deliver at the box office the way director David Fincher and friends likely hoped.

However, despite The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo‘s lack-lustre monetary presence, Sony has confirmed we’ll be given a sequel.

“[Dragon Tattoo] continues to do strong business and nothing has changed with respect to development of the next book,” revealed a rep, officially confirming that fans of the franchise can look forward to an upcoming American version of The Girl Who Played With Fire.

And will Rooney Mara still have a place? Absolutely, according to the actress, who, together with co-star Daniel Craig at a press conference, said they were on-board for any upcoming The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo sequels. Not that David Fincher will necessarily be at the helm: at the same conference, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo director indulged that directors tend only to get one-year contracts “in case they make any trouble”. (Though he also said that his approach would be to film the sequel and the original version back-to-back.)

So far, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo has earned $72 million in North America and overseas, which still hasn’t made up for the film’s $90 million budget. Here’s hoping audiences will be looking for something bleak to watch this January, or The Girl Who Plays With Fire may be a little less grand-scale.

Or we could just watch the Swedish originals.
