From winter sequins to midnight blues and bold prints, it’s common practice to seek style influence from the runways. An unfailing method to stay on-trend, but certainly not the only. A wardrobe of royalty is another fashion outlet that has proven to be just as inspirational. Instead of abiding by unorthodox trends showcased on the catwalk, take note from Kate and Pippa Middleton.
1. Bright and Feminine¨
The resurgence of highlighter-bright colours for winter is on the horizon, but are only appropriate to wear as accents (like an eclectic bag, or hat.) It’s not summer, after all. Instead of choosing one statement piece, this royal goddess infuses multiple trends into one. She peeks at her trend palette, and paints herself an original, timeless wardrobe. In this case, Kate’s elegant buttercream dress by Jenny Packman is lady-like, and mirrors the classic 1950s culture. The Duchess of Cambridge exudes her sophistication through each piece, without letting the runway define her wardrobe for her.
2. Exotic Prints and Subtle Undertones
Pippa Middleton is seen sporting a floor length floral gown, that is just as bold as it is subtle. Loud, compared to the monochromatic outfits we’re used to spotting her in, but understated when beside all the other prints that launched down the Fall/Winter 2012 runway. Yet another example of how the Middleton sisters are able to twist a trend into their own breed of clothing.
3. Bold Patterns with a Classy Twist
During the Royal Canadian Tour this past summer (note: Stephen Harper in the background), Kate payed homage to the country while sporting a blue lace dress, by Montreal-born designer, Erdem Moralioglu. While summer has long passed (or so it feels), feminine-lace pieces are beginning to enter the spotlight. After spotting Kate in this flawless number, it’s not surprising. The heiress plays with the idea of bold prints and patterns, by throwing in her own elegant flair.
Out of all the fashion ensembles mentioned above, this is a look almost all can relate to this time ˜o year. When temps drop, looking stylish while displaying our sense of self can be a bit of a challenge. Take inspiration from this socialite, who opted for a bold-hued jacket and classic accessories. Stand out this winter by finding a colour that defines your style, and is practical to re-wear, year after year. If the jacket is a solid colour, it’s simple to accessorize with, even in the harshest of winter months.
