American Idol just hasn’t been the same since original judges, Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul, left the show. Even the presence of stars like Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler couldn’t seem to revive the singing competition that was once known as the best reality competition on television.
JLO and Tyler both announced they would be leaving the show, leaving some pretty big shoes to fill. If anyone can do the job, it is certainly Mariah Carey. The divalicious singer is joining American Idol has a judge in the next season. And she doesn’t come cheap.
Her deal is rumored to be just under $18 million for one year with an option to renew, a source said.
If the rumors are true, the hefty paycheck will make Carey the highest paid judge on any reality competition on television. However, Lopez reportedly made $20 million plus bonuses on her second season of the show.
Carey is the only person confirmed for the judges’ panel on the next season of American Idol. Tyler is officially out of the picture and Randy Jackson’s role on the show may be less judge and more mentor for the upcoming season.
It’s gonna be so much fun working on @AmericanIdol, Carey tweeted yesterday. As a singer-songwriter, I’m excited to help find and nurture new talent.
Do you think Mariah Carey could save American Idol?
