TIFF Recommendation: Can a Song Save Your Life?

Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo star in the latest film from Once writer and director, John Carney, Can a Song Save Your Life?. If you are a fan of Academy Award-winning Once, like I am, you’ll understand why I had such high expectations for this film. I had a chance to check it out on Sunday at the Toronto International Film Festival and I have to say…  I loved it! Mark Ruffalo was a convincing deadbeat, ex-music producer dad named Dan who discovers Greta (played by Keira Knightley), a songwriter performing at an open mic night in New York City.

Yes, Keira Knightley sings in the romantic comedy and I was pleasantly surprised at her Nora Jones-esque vocals. Also making an acting/singing appearance is Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine, who plays Greta's douchey ex-boyfriend Dave. The cast of this film is lovely; you’ll find yourself smiling, laughing and even wiping away a tear while watching.

You’ll definitely also want to grab the soundtrack when it is available. I couldn’t stop humming some of Greta’s tunes, like “Lost Stars”, on my way home from the theatre.

Playing next at the Toronto International Film Festival:

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 14 2013
Ryerson Theatre (Toronto, ON)
12:00 PM
