We’ve seen the trailer and we’ve seen the photos, but what we didn’t see was how Anne Hathaway reacted to cutting her hair for her roll in Les Miserables.
“I wasn’t expecting it to be such a big deal because it was my idea,” Anne Hathaway said to Kelly Ripa last week on Live! “It was something I’ve wanted to do for a long time, and I knew it was something the character did, so I just offered it to the director and he said, ‘Yes.'”
She admits that the closer the haircut came, the more she knew she couldn’t back out.
“I’ve now done back flips out of windows, and I’ve jumped off buildings,” Anne Hathaway continued. “And cutting my hair reduced me to, like, mental patient-level crying. I was inconsolalble.”
Which probably explains why after shortly after making the chop, Anne Hathaway looked like the last thing she wanted was her picture taken (even though – let’s all admit – the short ‘do suits her).
However, there was one more step before Ms. Hathaway got the pixie cut most of us can never pull off: sitting with half-cut hair for 20 minutes before her stylist cut her hair on-screen in costume.
“It was all worth it,” she said. “Because at the very end of the shot I turned around and I saw Paul, beautiful Paul, in the dress with his arms outstretched. It was totally worth it just for that.”
And, well, because we’re all also going to cry having to watch Fantine lose those beautiful locks.
