Beauty Review: O.P.I Black Shatter Nail Polish

Anyone who knows me knows that I love nail polish. At-home manis have become a little hobby of mine “ changing the colour of my nails at least 3 times a week is the norm in my beauty regimen “ (really). I’ve tried many colours, formulas and patterns on my nails, but have never tried a shatter look.

What it is:
Black Shatter is a part of O.P.I’s special Katy Perry and Serena Williams collections. It’s a black top coat that crackles and ‘shrinks up’  as it dries on your nails so it gives a crackled effect. And note it’s selling out FAST! Word on the street is that there’s waiting lists for it.

Here’s what I found:

The Brighter the Better
The brighter or lighter your base shade, the better the effect will look. Opt for light greys, neon shades (super hot for 2011) or bright pinks and greens. Once the colour is completely dry add Black Shatter. Since your base shade is bright it will really pop and shine through each crack.

Dries Ultra Fast
Keep in mind that this nail polish dries super fast. You really only get one shot to coat your entire nail with it before it dries almost instantly “ so make it quick. Avoid double application on the same spot, it can get clumpy.

One Coat is Enough
Anymore than that and the effect gets lost. You can double it up for a darker shatter, but I would personally suggest one coat.

Matte Finish
Don’t expect a shiny or glossy finish, because this bad boy dries matte. I personally, would have preferred a glossy finish, but that’s just my taste. You could always add a coat of clear finish polish for shine.

The true beauty of this effect is that it allows you to get creative. Try it on top of all types of colours, from subtle to attention grabbers, the possibilities are endless.

I couldn’t believe all the compliments I received wearing it. Everything from, OMG your nails look so cool, to I’ve never seen anything like that, where’d you get it done? and my favourite, you did it yourself? No way!

Below, I used OPI’s “I Want to be a Lone Star” as the base (from the new Texas collection), and Shatter on top.

I had my nails done recently and decided to do a pretty strong gold (I know it’s capled 24k gold but the brand name escapes me.) and I did black shatter on my thumbs (since my dad can’t stand all black nails, plis it’s the holidays so why have mainly black nails?) and I love it! So pretty, and I’ve been getting a ton of complements! Definetly recomend!

ya, i believe that it probably gets clumpy after a while, but thats only if you let it out to the sun. opi is the best brand of nail polish, i believe the only kind that gets clumpy is the shatter. just dont leave nail polish where the sun gets on it and youll be fine. opi is really the best quality nail polish u can find.

I am completely disappointed with this product. I’ve had it for about 2 months and the first few applications were perfectly fine. As time went on and the longer and longer this nail polish sat in my collection it turned EXTREMELY CLUMPY AND DRY. Right now it is at the consistency of dried play dough. I am so disappointed in this product considering i paid almost 9 dollars for this bottle of nail polish! This was my first OPI purchase, and this experience makes me not want to purchase any OPI products in the future.

YES!! I have both OPI white Shatter and black Shatter. The black is thick and like tar. It gets real thick on the brush abn around the tip of the rim. I even cleaned the inside of the rim with a Qtip and it came out clumpy. Neither color goes on smooth. I sort of dab them on.
I bought off brands called crackel which have the same affect as OPI Shatter but goes on much smoother.

Sally’s Beauty Supply sells a China Glaze version for about $5 plus tax.
It works just as well and the crackle comes in a bunch of different colors, including black.
I bought the purple one earlier in the week and LOVE it.

I purchased this first of the Glam Slams by Serena Williams. I LOVE the base coat lacquer (apply two coats because it is a pail green/gold combination) and then the Black Shatter. I am not sure if my bottle was already open upon arrival, but my nail technician found it VERY thick and required a little practice to get the hang of the best application technique.
I love the crackle like finish and it’s just doubled (at least) my options! Since this product dries out so quickly, I wonder how long it will last and IF you can add thinner?
    Regardless, it’s a hoot!!

Nice to see that this type of product is being re-introduced. 10 years ago, covergirl (or maybe it was revlon – can’t remember for sure) introduced this to the market. I remember buying it in whte and blue. It was not received very well and was pulled shortly after. I miss having the “stained glass panel” look. It will be fun to try it again.
