When Hudson’s Bay announced that they would begin liquidating most of its stores as of Monday, March 24, 2025, there were six stores in Ontario and Quebec that were set to survive post-liquidation. Now, a new court filing says that Hudson’s Bay will start selling off all merchandise on Friday, April 25 at the six stores previously spared from liquidation.
The six stores that were previously spared and will now begin liquidation sales are: Hudson’s Bay Toronto Flagship (176 Yonge Street, Toronto, Ontario), Hudson’s Bay Yorkdale Shopping Centre (3401 Dufferin Street, North York, Ontario), Hudson’s Bay Hillcrest Mall (9350 Yonge Street, Richmond Hill, Ontario), Hudson’s Bay Montreal Flagship (585 Saint-Catherine Street West, Montreal, Quebec), Hudson’s Bay CF Carrefour Laval (3003 Boul. le Carrefour, Laval, Quebec), Hudson’s Bay CF Fairview Pointe Claire (6790 Trans-Canada Hwy, Pointe-Claire, Quebec).
Adam Zalev, managing director of Hudson’s Bay’s financial adviser Reflect Advisors, says in an affidavit that was sent to lawyers on Wednesday, April 24, that Canada’s oldest company is making the move because there is a “low probability” that it will find a buyer for the six remaining locations.
However, if a bid for the stores is received that keeps them alive, Zalev says Hudson’s Bay retains the right to remove the six stores from the liquidation process.
The additional liquidation detailed in Zalev’s affidavit is a painful but not unexpected turn of events for a company that filed for creditor protection last month, citing significant difficulty paying its bills because of the trade war, the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and a lack of downtown traffic. His affidavit comes after the 355-year-old company received court permission last month to liquidate 74 Bay locations, 13 Saks Off Fifth stores and two Saks Fifth Avenue sites in Canada, putting 9,364 jobs in jeopardy.
Reached for comment about the latest developments, Hudson’s Bay spokeswoman Tiffany Bourré said that she had nothing to add beyond the court documents.
The move effectively scuttles Hudson’s Bay’s department store empire and comes after it received court permission last month to liquidate 90 of its 96 Bay, Saks and Saks Off Fifth stores by mid-June, while it hunts for investors or buyers that could restructure or maintain the business.
The company is aiming to wrap up the liquidation by Sunday, June 15 2025.
