Whether you have a long-time love or only just met that cutie at Starbucks, chances are you’ll text.
It’s the flirty way to talk without worrying about awkward pauses in conversation or racking up your minutes, plus you get to drive him wild with naughty puns and innuendos.
But as we’ve seen with Tiger, Chris Brown, Anna Faris and other celebs, sending sexy texts or one step further, “sexting”, can have some serious repercussions if they fall into the wrong hands.
Like everything in dating, texting is a game. Here are some rules of engagement:
Do: Make Him Wait
He’s just sent you a message, and it’s even cuter than the last. While the temptation is to send one back instantly, by doing this you run the risk of coming across as too eager, which can translate into Needy later on. Keep it short, keep it fun, keep it flirty…and keep him waiting!
Do: Spice Things Up
If you’ve been with someone for a while (read: someone you trust), brighten his day with a sexy message. It doesn’t have to be explicit necessarily; most guys will agree less is more. Leave it open-ended to really get his attention, something like, “I can’t wait to get you home tonight…” will do. Or if you’re really in the mood, set his pulse racing with something more direct that he won’t be able to ignore.
Do: Send Him Praise
If you know he has a big meeting or an important presentation coming up, shoot him a text to know you’re thinking of him and you’re in his corner. If he has a pet-name or if you have an inside joke, try and incorporate that to really make it special. He’ll appreciate that you took the time to think of him, and you can bet he’ll thank you for it!
Don’t: Send Pictures
Never, ever, ever. Even if he is your Precious Schnookums Forever-Bear, accidents happen. Racy photo-messages can be seen, forwarded and read by unintended recipients. And in the event you break up, you have no control over where those pics will end up. Tempt him with messages that promise a show later to really drive him wild – and save you from embarrassment.
Don’t: Gangsta Abrevi8
You’re not Snooki, so don’t text like her! You’re a mature, sophisticated and intelligent woman, so let that show through your texts. The occasional abbreviation is sometimes necessary, but avoid tacky 8th-grade acronyms like, “I N V U B/C U R A Q T”. It also reads as lazy, which isn’t a trait most guys admire.
Don’t: Overshare
For dudes, getting blow-by-blow updates of what you’re up to, where you are and who you’re with is a total overload. He’s more likely to get tired of the constant bugging and ignore your messages. Leave him wanting more by filling him in on the essentials, and leave details to face-to-face conversation.
