Miley Cyrus debuted a new tattoo this weekend, reading Just Breathe, located under her perky seventeen-year old boobs. If you listen closely, you can hear the horrified gasps of parents everywhere.
As the accusations of impropriety and poor parenting begin to fly, I can’t help but feel sorry for the gal. If you’re placed on the pedestal of being the perfect pop princess 24/7, you’re bound to slip off it eventually. Let’s consider the facts: at age 17, Cyrus needed parental permission to get the tat in question, which is in honour of a friend who passed away from Cystic Fibrosis. She didn’t sneak off behind her parent’s back to some back-alley parlour, and instead of some god-awful sunset cartoon (Scarlett Johansson, we’re looking at you), it has some kind of emotional significance. To her anyway.
It seems Miley’s always on the wrong end of the criticism stick. If anything should come under fire here, it’s the parenting skills of Mom & Pop Cyrus. If I’d come home with a tattoo at 17 (which I would’ve gotten illegally, because no frickin’ way would my folks have signed the waiver), it would have been hidden under layers of make-up caked on thicker than Gwen Stefani’s lipstick.
The point is, I’m not Miley Cyrus. I haven’t grown up scorned with criticism from scathing tabloids and TMZ, being held to unrealistic expectations. And if her parents are cool with it, perhaps other parents should start to be too. Because let’s face it “ if she’s gotten to 17 with no shaved heads, nipple-rings and rehab stints, she’s already doing better than half of young Hollywood. What do you think of Miley’s tattoo? Harmless and cute or tacky to boot?
Until the next whisper¦
At 17, I knew girls who were getting tacky tatoos that they now are ashamed to show off. Miley’s ink is a simple pretty font that’s concealable if she needs it to be. And to top it off, it’s not a night-out-and-rebelling type tatto, like you explained, it has sentimental value.
