After it was revealed that Kristen Wiig may not be returning for the highly-anticipated Bridesmaids sequel, the internet basically exploded. But thanks to a recent interview with director Paul Feig, it turns out Kristen Wiig may be returning to the franchise after all – well, maybe.
“Everyone is up for it, and yet it’s hard to say,” Paul Feig told Vanity Fair. “Everyone’s very busy right now [which] is one of the problems, and kind of doing their own thing, but we’ve very open to it. My only stipulation is that I want it to be good or better than the first one. You definitely don’t want people to be like, ‘Oh, shoot, I wish they didn’t make that.'”
(You mean like The Hangover II, Mr. Feig?)
However, Feig’s revelation doesn’t mesh with Jon Hamm’s belief that Kristen Wiig isn’t going to do the sequel – which he mentioned to E! in September.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kristen Wiig’s involvement might not even be a question: Universal is reportedly considering putting Melissa McCarthy at the forefront of the sequel – which hasn’t even begun being written by co-writers Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo.
“We aren’t working on [Bridesmaids 2],” Kristen Wiig said. “Annie and I aren’t planning a sequel. We are writing something else.”
Evidently, even those behind the scenes are exactly as confused about the franchise’s future as we are.
