On Anne Hathaway’s “Les Miserables” Weight

Anne Hathaway is getting some serious praise for her role as Fantine in “Les Miserables,” with her performance being even more applauded thanks to her hair chop and weight loss.

However, director Tom Hooper didn’t necessarily want her to go to such extremes.

Us Weekly reports that in a recent interview with the LA Times, Anne revealed that dropping 25 pounds was “an obsession of her own making,” and had nothing to do with Hooper’s instructions.

“To be honest, I thought she was going further than she should, and I tried to discourage her,” he said. Anne agreed.

“Tom didn’t like what I was doing, but he understood why I was doing it,” she added. “No one liked what I was doing. By the end, people were hugging me, and they would get emotional because I felt so frail.”

Well no wonder. Considering she was already tiny, 25 pounds makes a huge difference. Here’s hoping everyone recognizes her commitment to weight loss as one of an actor to a role, and not one to thinness. In fact, she even made Matt Lauer well aware of that in an interview, when she told him she did what she did “to look like she was dying.”
