Gilmore Girls, Season 1, Episode 7 Recap: Kiss and Tell

This episode originally aired November 16, 2000 on The WB

The episode starts with Rory and Dean sharing their first kiss at Doose’s Market, which sends Rory into a whirlwind of emotions. Surprised and flustered, Rory accidentally shoplifts a box of cornstarch, leading to some humorous moments.

Lorelai discovers the cornstarch and teases Rory about it, trying to get her to spill the beans on what made her so distracted. Rory eventually confesses about the kiss, and Lorelai is excited for her daughter, though she’s also a bit shocked to learn it was with Dean, the new boy in town.

Rory, however, becomes increasingly nervous about the growing attention around her relationship with Dean. At school, her friends Lane and Paris notice something is up and pressure her for details.

Lorelai, wanting to get to know Dean better, invites him over to their home for a movie night. Although Dean is initially uncomfortable (thanks to Lorelai’s protective and slightly intimidating approach), the night eventually goes well. Lorelai and Dean bond over old films, and Rory is relieved to see her mother approve of her new boyfriend.

However, when Sookie finds out about Rory’s first kiss, she accidentally spills the beans to Emily, Rory’s grandmother. Emily is upset that Lorelai didn’t tell her about the kiss first, leading to another one of their frequent confrontations. This highlights the ongoing tension and communication barriers between Lorelai and her mother.

The episode delves into the complexities of mother-daughter relationships, both between Lorelai and Rory and between Lorelai and Emily. It emphasizes the theme of communication and the challenges of growing up.

Memorable quotes from the episode:

  • “You are a great, cool kid and the best friend a girl could have. And it’s so much more fun to be friends with someone who’s alive than with someone who’s dead, which would make you really boring at dances.” – Lorelai
  • “He kissed me!” – Rory
    “Where?” – Lorelai
“At Doose’s. Not in Doose’s, that would be weird.” – Rory
  • “Rory’s first kiss! Oh, I want details, honey. Was it French? Was there tongue involved? Did he have lips like pillows? I’ve always wanted to kiss a guy with lips like pillows.” – Sookie
  • “You should’ve called to tell me that Rory was involved with a boy! It’s very important information for a grandmother to have!” – Emily
“You’re right. Next time I’ll call. As soon as she’s done, I’ll get her to give me the play-by-play, and then I’ll call you immediately.” – Lorelai
