For witchy style lovers, it is the most wonderful time of year (well, it’s supposed to be. This past weekend was unseasonably hot af). But honestly, no force of nature can stop me from getting jazzed about channeling my inner Morticia around this time. I mean, she’s in there all the time, but fall is really when she gets to come out and shine. Here are our favourite witchy spirit animals to inspire your gothic Halloween style.
The Craft (1996)
No high school uniform could stop Nancy, Bonnie, and Rochelle from embodying a witchy af aesthetic. They are the epitome of witchy ’90s squad goals. Each one of these characters has a distinct identity, portrayed masterfully through their costume. Neve Campbell with her oversized jackets; Nancy (Fairuza Balk) with her blood red lips, snake-like brows and silver crucifixes (plus that super-creepy attitude); Rochelle and the suspenders and school tie. They’re like, a perfect goth girl-band. Be still my black heart. Rumour is, the movie is getting a remake/reboot, but we prefer the original just fine.
Death Becomes Her (1992)
Goldie Hawn and Meryl Streep bring so much glamour to this black comedy. Even when they are physically falling apart, these characters make a timeless statement in costume jewelry, barrel curls, boas and fishnet gloves. Long live fashion’s femme fatale. And this movie is worth a revisit for its camp value alone.
The Witches of Eastwick (1987)
Cher is pretty much perfection in this film. Her character is an artist who dgaf what’s happening around the town, but does manage to pull herself together in a dark-bohemian-chic fashion with lots of black drapey fabrics (bathrobes, off the shoulder shirts) and also rock T’s and maxi skirts. Her signature hair is large and brilliant as ever. Cher can do no wrong.
The Addams Family (1991)
Maybe the most iconic example of witchy style, Morticia (Anjelica Huston) represents not just style goals, but beauty / hair goals, and also relationship goals. The ironic thing about her iconic status though, is that the film is shot in such dark light that you can never really see the distinct fabric and line of Morticia’s costumes. She’s a silhouette, a shadow, with a distinctly made-up white face. Aside from her cheekbones, red lips and blue eyeshadow, she’s like, almost purely an ethereal, witchy vision.
Poison Ivy (1992)
This ’90s cult classic shows a 17-year old Drew Barrymore in her truest hippie wild-child form. She plays a teen fatale who seduces basically everyone and schemes her way into the personal lives of a rich family. Her costumes range from leather jackets, tousled hair and wrought iron jewelry to oversized blazers and pencil skirts. V. boho-chic.
