Pantone, the world’s leading authority on colour (think Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada explaining cerulean), selected Tangerine Tango as the It colour of 2012. The red-orange shade appeared on the runways of Elie Tahari, Nanette Lepore and Chloe. From the runway to the beauty department, Sephora plans to release a Tangerine Tango collection, and pops of the colour appear in Essie and Bobbi Brown’s spring collections. Here’s our tips to wear 2012’s hottest colour.
1. Lips
The easiest way to add a pop of Tangerine Tango to your look is on the lips. A slew of tangerine lipsticks, lipstains and glosses will be on the market for spring. A bright tangerine lipstick is a good way to try this season’s hot colour, by drawing attention to the mouth. The vibrant red-orange colour adds warmth to your skin, the way a cool, blue-red flatters cool skin tones. Worn over lipstick to create a statment look, or worn alone, tangerine lip glosses add a high-shine splash of colour. Colour-shy ladies opt for stains rather that high pigment lip sticks. A liptains adds just a hint of the colour to your lips, without overwhelming the rest of the face. Pair your tangerine lips with a natural eye, simple eye liner or mascara, for a modern makeup look.
2. Cheeks
Using a Tangerine Tango blush is a great way to rock the trend and create a healthy glow. But always keep skin tone in mind when choosing your shade. Fair skin tones should stick to a subtle peach shade, while darker skin tones are free to opt for brighter colours like mango and tangerine. Apply tangerine blush to the apples of your cheeks to add a bit of warmth to the face. Or try a corner blush for a more fashion-forwad use of the shade. Start by applying the blush at the temples and work inward stopping just before the temples to create this look. Avoid using bronzer with tangerine blush, the colour combination may look more like a tanning-salon mistake than a high-fashion flush.
3. Nails
Spring away from winter’s muted manicures and add a punch of colour with Tangerine Tango. For a bold punch of colour, try one of the bright orange shades like Essie’s Orange, It’s Obvious. For those with cool, fair skin tones, pale peach shades, like Essie’s A Crewed Interest, are a quick way to update your classic nude manicure. Try adding glitter topcoats, OPI’s Shattered or other bright complimentary colours to play with the nail art trend that will continue through the spring and summer months.
4. Eyes
Wearing Tangerine on your eyelids can be tricky, but pale or shimmery shadows, applied in the crease, add warmth and colour. Tangerine Tango is especially flattering on blue eyes, as orange and blue are complimentary shades on the colour wheel. For daytime, opt for a subdued, shimmery shade of tangerine and apply it lightly in the creases for a pinch of colour to add to your basic liner and mascara. If you want the colour to pop for a night on hw town, a bright tangerine shadow applied from the lash line to the crease of your eyelid is an unexpected pop of colour that works if the rest of the face looks natural.
