Harry Potter himself couldn’t magically force his drinking habit to disappear. Daniel Radcliffe “ the star of the movie series of the century “ admitted recently that he became reliant on alcohol while filming the movies, and has since had to quit. It’s safe to say there will be no more late nights at the Three Broom Sticks or nights of flip cup butter beer competitions.
I became reliant on [alcohol] to enjoy stuff, he said. The now 21-year-old started drinking his potion of choice, whiskey, on the set of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, but quickly realized it was becoming a problem for him. Soon after, he quit drinking and hasn’t touched a drop since August 2010.
For any young star to admit such a problem at such a young age is commendable. Radcliffe says, though, that he was lucky he got away with it for so long before Hollywood, and the rest of the world for that matter, found out.
I really got away with that because there were many instances when a paparazzi shot like that could have been taken, he said.
The star also explained that the problem stemmed from getting caught up in the Hollywood lifestyle. After all, he was just a young nine-year-old boy when he was chosen from among thousands of hopefuls to play the boy wizard, Harry Potter.
Growing up in the spotlight, with so much pressure from fans and everyone around him, Radcliffe didn’t know how to handle the fame.
There were many years there when I was just so enamored with the idea of living some sort of famous person’s lifestyle that really isn’t suited to me.
But now, the actor is staying sober and isn’t afraid to admit he prefers a night in to a night on the town. In fact, Radcliffe even skipped out on a recent Harry Potter premiere party so he could stay home and watch the Discovery Channel with a bowl of Sugar Puffs, according to the Guardian.
There’s no shame in enjoying a quiet life. And that’s been the realization of the past few years for me, he said.
