Awards Season is Upon Us—Here’s What to Expect

2016 has come to a close (hallelujah), and as we begin the new year there are plenty of entertaining things to look forward to in 2017. Case in point: the crowning of our favourite stars, TV shows and films. While we may be biased in our own selections, there are the committees and critics that have weighed in their top picks and predictions for the 2017 award season, and with that we shall reflect on the good and the snubs, with some past awards' memories that may seemingly repeat this coming season. From returning vets to a new slew of binge-worthy programming, the 2017 awards season has a stack of names and features that we're stoked to see the outcome of.

But before we get to this year's predictions, let's rewind and recall some of the most memorable moments from 2016.

While the Oscar nominations have yet to be disclosed, it’s safe to assume that much of the above films will also land as contenders on the big screen. You’re going to see Chazelle and Lonergan’s films get more recognition. Best Actress is still up for contention but there’s been a lot of push for Emma Stone ever since she won at the 2016 Venice Film Festival. However, look out for Ruth Negga (Loving), too. Casey Affleck, as mentioned above, will get further nods. But, Andrew Garfield (Hacksaw Ridge) may be a surprise this year.

The Jungle Book should win the Oscar for the best visual effects, and the film stars Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson (flashback to Lost in Translation) so there’s also that to be giddy about.

Make sure to check back for updates on the Golden Globes, SAG Awards, Oscars and more award show buzz for 2017.

And, by the way, who are you rooting for?
