Long before elaborate 10-step body-care routines took over TikTok, there was The Body Shop Body Butter. If you spent any time wandering through a mall in the ’90s or early 2000s, chances are you remember those colourful tubs—and probably had a favourite scent that you could identify before you even walked through the store’s doors.
Now, more than three decades after Body Butter first launched in 1992, The Body Shop Canada is giving one of its most recognizable products a makeover.
The newly reformulated Body Butter collection has officially arrived with richer, creamier textures, updated fragrances and new packaging, while keeping the basic idea behind the original intact: slather it on whenever your skin is feeling particularly dry and let the thick, buttery formula do its thing.
This time around, the formulas promise up to 72 hours of moisture and have been designed to melt more easily into the skin without leaving behind the greasy residue or white cast that can sometimes come with heavier body moisturizers. There are also different textures depending on how thirsty your skin happens to be, ranging from lighter creams for normal-to-dry skin to richer butters and an ultra-rich balm for seriously dry skin.
And, thankfully, The Body Shop hasn’t used the makeover as an excuse to retire the scents people actually remember.
There are 11 Body Butters in the refreshed lineup, including nostalgic favourites like Satsuma, Coconut, Strawberry, Mango, Almond Milk, British Rose, Pink Grapefruit, Moringa and Olive. For skin that needs a little more attention, there are also two heavier hitters: Shea and Hemp.
Shea remains the hero of the collection, formulated for dry to very dry skin with 14 per cent Community Fair Trade shea butter and a warm, nutty scent with a subtle hint of lavender. Hemp, meanwhile, is the serious option for ultra-dry skin, combining four per cent hemp seed oil with 12 per cent Community Fair Trade shea butter in a richer formula designed to help reinforce the skin barrier and prevent moisture loss.
Then there are the ones that are mostly about turning moisturizing into something you actually look forward to. Satsuma is still bright and citrusy; Coconut brings the obligatory tropical holiday energy; Strawberry is sweet and juicy; Mango contains 10 per cent Community Fair Trade mango seed oil from Rajasthan; and Pink Grapefruit is sharp, fresh and lightweight enough to make sense even when the weather is warm.
In other words, choosing one may still come down to exactly what it did when Body Butter first appeared in the ’90s: standing in front of all those tubs and deciding which one smells most like you.
Some beauty products don’t necessarily need to be reinvented. Sometimes they just need a really good update—and, apparently, another 72 hours of moisture.
