Mattel Celebrates Whitney Houston’s Legacy With A New Barbie

Whitney Houston is officially a Barbie.

Mattel has unveiled its first-ever Whitney Houston Barbie doll, celebrating the late superstar with a recreation of one of her most recognizable looks: the purple mini dress, colourful earrings and larger-than-life glamour she wore in the 1987 music video for “I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me).”

The Barbie Signature Whitney Houston Doll comes dressed in a replica of Houston’s purple tank dress, complete with colourful drop earrings, vibrant eye makeup and her signature voluminous curls. Naturally, there’s also a microphone and stand, ready for Barbie-sized performances.

According to Mattel, the doll celebrates Houston’s “record-breaking career, legacy and timeless music that inspired generations of artists and continues to resonate with fans around the world.”

The release was created in collaboration with The Estate of Whitney E. Houston and Pat Houston, Whitney’s sister-in-law and executor of her estate. But according to Pat, the idea of turning Whitney into a doll actually dates back decades.

“Whitney had never really endorsed anything, and we started having conversations about her brand … we talked about a Mattel doll 20 years ago,” Pat told People.

Houston, who died in 2012 at the age of 48, was initially interested in a doll inspired by her role in the blockbuster 1992 film The Bodyguard and its massively successful soundtrack. That version never came to fruition, but Pat says Whitney remained interested in the idea.

“She really wanted to invest the time in doing a doll,” she said.

Now, more than a decade after Houston’s death, the project has finally become a reality.

“I’m just really happy that we’re seeing this doll come to fruition, and it’s going to be a lasting influence across generations,” Pat said. “I’m just honored to be in this place at this time, and we’re actually doing it.”

Rather than revisit The Bodyguard, Mattel and the Houston estate ultimately landed on a defining moment from earlier in her career: “I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me).”

Released as the lead single from Houston’s second studio album, Whitney, in 1987, the euphoric pop anthem became one of the singer’s signature songs and one of the defining hits of the decade. It topped charts around the world, including the Billboard Hot 100, and earned Houston the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

The accompanying music video was just as memorable. Filled with bold colours, high-energy choreography and quintessentially ’80s fashion and beauty, it captured Houston at the height of her early superstardom. Her purple dress, colourful accessories, dramatic makeup and gravity-defying curls helped make the clip an enduring piece of pop-culture imagery.

For Pat, choosing that particular Whitney era was a “no-brainer,” especially given the emotional connection generations of fans continue to have with the song.

Recreating such a familiar look also meant getting the smallest details right. Pat says Mattel carefully considered everything “down to the earrings, to the color of the hair, to the color of the dress, to the details on the shoes.”

“It was incredible to be a part of all that, even to walk through their showroom,” she said. “Everyone was so involved in every aspect of creating such an amazing doll.”

For Pat, that attention to detail made the collaboration particularly meaningful.

“I witnessed the care, I witnessed the creativity, and the commitment behind celebrating Whitney’s legacy,” she said. “I’m just very grateful to have been a part of a project that honors her artistry, her elegance, and her impact that she still has on the world.”

More than three decades after “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” first had the world dancing, Houston’s influence remains unmistakable. Now one of pop music’s most enduring icons has been immortalized in another form — as Barbie.
