The fall semester at Hillman College is rapidly approaching, and Netflix has released the first trailer for its highly anticipated A Different World sequel series.
More than three decades after the beloved sitcom signed off, a new generation of students is heading to Hillman—and judging by the nearly two-minute trailer, Netflix isn’t forgetting about the characters who made the fictional historically Black college such an iconic television destination in the first place.
The new series centres on Deborah Wayne (Maleah Joi Moon), the daughter of original A Different World favourites Whitley Gilbert (Jasmine Guy) and Dwayne Wayne (Kadeem Hardison), as she arrives at her parents’ alma mater ready to forge an identity of her own.
Of course, attending the same college where your parents fell in love comes with a certain amount of baggage.
The trailer sees Deborah settling into campus life, meeting her new friends and roommates, and navigating everything that comes with being a young Black student finding her place in the world. At one point, Deborah and her friends declare that they’re determined to live their “best, young, gifted, Black, talented lives”—a pretty fitting mission statement for a series following in A Different World’s footsteps.
And while the new generation is firmly at the centre of the story, Netflix is leaning heavily into nostalgia.
Guy and Hardison appear throughout the trailer as Whitley and Dwayne, giving longtime fans their first real glimpse at where the couple has landed decades after their memorable on-again, off-again romance became one of the defining relationships of the original series. In another particularly sweet nod to the past, Deborah can even be spotted wearing her father’s signature flip-up glasses.
They aren’t the only familiar faces returning to Hillman.
Jada Pinkett Smith reprises her role as Lena James, the character she played during the final two seasons of the original series, while legendary producer, director and choreographer Debbie Allen also appears as Dr. Langhorne, offering Deborah some sage advice as she begins her college journey.
The combination of familiar faces and a new class of students makes it clear that the sequel isn’t simply trying to recreate the original show. Instead, it appears to be using Hillman as a bridge between generations.
Returning to Hillman College
Originally airing from 1987 to 1993, A Different World began as a spin-off of The Cosby Show, initially following Denise Huxtable (Lisa Bonet) as she enrolled at Hillman College. But the series quickly developed an identity entirely its own, particularly after Allen came aboard as a creative force behind the scenes.
Over six seasons, the show became known for balancing comedy and romance with conversations about race, class, politics, relationships and the Black college experience. It also introduced viewers to a sprawling ensemble of characters who became television favourites, including Whitley, Dwayne, Freddie Brooks, Ron Johnson, Kim Reese and Lena James.
Its portrayal of life at a fictional HBCU also helped make Hillman feel like a real place—one that generations of viewers have remained attached to long after the show’s 1993 finale.
That legacy gives Netflix’s sequel plenty to live up to.
The first trailer suggests the new A Different World understands that. Rather than treating Hillman as little more than nostalgic set dressing, the series appears ready to explore what college life—and young Black adulthood—looks like for a very different generation of students.
At the same time, having Deborah at the centre of the story gives the revival a direct connection to the show’s most famous love story. She’s walking the same campus her parents once did, but the trailer makes it clear she’ll be figuring out Hillman, friendship and adulthood on her own terms.
And, yes, she’ll apparently be doing some of it in Dwayne Wayne’s glasses.
All 10 episodes of Netflix’s A Different World begin streaming Thursday, September 24, 2026.
