As the festive spirit washes over us, it’s proper holiday etiquette to gift-wrap presents for others and expect nothing in return. Most have mastered this act of affection, but it’s rare we find a gift that just keeps on giving, past the initial purchase. Pay tribute to the holidays this season by supporting those who need it most:
1. Buxom “ Stay-there Eye Shadow, $17. Available at Sephora.
Each of these popsicle-bright shades will liven up any look, and are even waterproof to last throughout the many snow flurries to come. With every purchase, Bare Escentuals will donate to Canine Companions, a not-for-profit organization that provides disabled individuals with assistance dogs. They even went one step further: every shade is named after a different lovable pup (the shimmery black is called ˜black lab’.) The shadows are also paraben-free, and contain natural ingredients.
2. Josie Maran “ GoGo Instant Natural Volume Argan Mascara, $22. Available at Sephora.
This volume-enhancing mascara is stocked with pure ingredients that nourish the lashes and intensifies their length. Recently, Josie Maran, a supermodel and activist, has partnered with City of Hope to help fund cancer research. When you buy a tube of mascara, another will be donated to a cancer patient or survivor, and $1 of that purchase will support the organization. It’s a perfect stocking-stuffer idea, that you’ll end up giving to many.
3. M∙A∙C Viva Glam Gaga Lipglass, $17.50. Available at M∙A∙C Cosmetics.
Just when you thought Lady Gaga and Cyndi Lauper achieved it all with their Mac Viva Glam campaign last spring, Lady G. is back again. While the shades are more neutral this time around, the cause is just as bold. M∙A∙C continued to collaborate with the songstress and fight for the same cause. The money raised from these shimmery beige lipglasses will go to the M∙A∙C AIDS Fund to support those living with HIV and AIDS.
4. LUSH “ Charity Pot Body Lotion, $5. Available at LUSH.
This eco-friendly organization promotes cruelty-free, organic products that stand to define human rights. This particular lotion is made with Fair Trade cocoa butter and almond oil. While the LUSH charity pot has been around for a few years now (and for good reason), they re-introduced a new, mini-sized pot this year ($5). Funds from each purchase are given to smaller charities across the globe. It’s an inexpensive gift idea that is worth every cent.
5. GAP(RED) “ v-neck tee, $39.95. Available at Gap.
This grey v-neck, featuring vibrant splotch patterns, is practically calling for attention. The playful print was designed by esteemed French designer, Isabel Marant, and speaks out on multiple levels. Beginning November 28th, 50 per cent of profits will be given to Global Fund, an organization that supports the fight against AIDS in Africa. It’s a rewarding gift option that will brighten up a wardrobe, as well as the cause it supports.
6. Dermalogica “ FITE products. Available at Dermalogica.
When a Dermalogica product has a lime-green “FITE” label on its packaging, rest assured knowing you’re supporting a good cause. Dermalogica powered together with Kiva.org, to create a platform for women in developing countries around the world. After purchasing a product with the green sleeve, find the code inside to activate your donation, and select the type of business you wish to fund. FITE aims to help empower these women, by giving them an opportunity start a small business of their own.
7. Women’s Peace Collection “ Peace Scarf Serenity India, $48. Available at womenspeacecollection.com
This multi-hued silk scarf will not only keep a friend cozy this winter, but they will stay warm knowing that 15 per cent of profits are used to support schools for children in Dharamala, a city in northern India. Women’s Peace Collection is an organization that supports women struggling in poverty-stricken countries. Each of the gifts offered on their website (the scarf is one of many) mirrors the culture that receives each donation. It’s a stylish gift idea that epitomizes what the holidays are meant to be about.
