Choosing The Right Plus Size Swimwear

When it comes to swimwear, it can be a challenge for plus size women to find a flattering yet comfortable swimsuit they feel good about wearing. Plus size swimwear designs in the past often had the misfortune of bland colors, minimal design, and unflattering shaping. Plus size clothing has improved greatly over the years, making choosing a plus size swimsuit an easy task for online shoppers.

1) Choosing Plus Size Swimwear

When choosing plus size swimwear you want to make the most of your assets and camouflage the body areas you are most concerned with. You want stretch, comfort, durability, and good looks in a plus size swimsuit. Look for plus size swimsuits that have spandex mixed in the fabric, this gives you plenty of stretch and helps define your curves in all the right places. Make sure you have ample support in the bust area, with sturdy straps and a built in shelf bra. Try on a number of different styles of swimsuits to find the most flattering necklines and shapes for your body.

2) Finding Flattering Swimsuits For The Plus Size Figure

One-piece swimsuits are often the best choice for plus size women. Wearing smaller patterns is a good choice for plus size women. Stay away from large patterns in areas you want to de-emphasize, instead wear larger prints in areas you want to accentuate. If you have a smaller bustline but large hips, large patterns in the bust area combined with darker colors in the lower part of the swimwuit will accent your bustline and keep your hip area looking leaner. Solid swimwear in darker colors creates a longer look. Swimdresses are another way to go with plus size suits, giving you an attractive top while providing an empire skirt style carefully covering your hips and thighs. If your waist is bigger a swimdress with flowing skirt is attractive, shaping your waist near the bustline, yet taking the main emphasis off your waistline. A v-shape neckline or suits with with vertical stripes or accent colors will help emphasize your bustline and make your waist appear smaller, giving you a longer, slender look.

Flatter your shape with Forever 21’s Ruffled Floral Plus Size Bathing Suit, $35.80. Available at Forever 21.

3) Can Plus Size Women Wear A Two-Piece Swimsuit?

Yes, you really can wear a two piece swimsuit with the current plus size swimsuit fashions. Tankinis are a great way to go, providing a longer tank shaped top paired with a traditional swimsuit bottom or a skirt style bottom to match with your tankini top. Traditional two-piece swimsuits work well with a high waist bottom to match a bra style swim top. If you still are concerned about wearing a two piece suit use a cover-up such as a long gauze shirt, tie around the waist skirt or colorful sundress.

Check out Penningtons’ Multi Allover Print Plus Size Tankini Top, $49.99, and pair it with their Solid Elastic Waistband Swim Brief in Black, $39.99. Available at Penningtons.

Great tips. The swimsuits with the skirts attached at the bottom are always fun to wear. And one-pieces all the way! They are the best at masking any areas around the mid-section that you are looking to hide.

I just wrote a piece on the Jantzen Vamp swimsuit which I am in love with thanks to it’s crazy-flattering fit and great price. There are a few reasonable facsimiles in even bigger plus sizes available as well. I think I covered them all 🙂
