The dampened ground isn’t all that’s exposed to sunlight come spring, our skin is also in for a bright awakening. While we’ve been anticipating the warmth for a month too long, we’ve also gotten used to swathing ourselves in layer after layer. Now that it’s time to emerge from our hiding spots (finally!) it’s normal to want to look our best. After all, we never know when the sun will decide to stow away again. So before scurrying off to sunbathe, read on to discover the best swimsuit for your figure:
Curvy figure
If you’re a full-figured gal, scope out a bathing suit that highlights your waistline. The best option? Any suit that wraps around your mid-section. If you want to sport a bikini, look for one that is adorned with side panels (where the ties would be)- this will draw attention to your curvaceous frame for all the right reasons. When it comes to a bikini top, all eyes will glance upward if you flaunt a style with a halter neckline to outline your shape. Tip? Opt for diagonal patterns to accentuate your curves.
Accentuate your curves with Anthropologie’s Lane Lines Maillot, $168.
Broad shoulders
Think vertical. You want to create the illusion of a drawn out figure to work against the width of your shoulders. To elongate the body, select a suit that has wider straps, or one that falls down mid-shoulder. Opposite to what was suggested above, in this case, drawing attention to your hips will work in your favour. By emphasizing your hips, it tricks the eyes into thinking the shoulders are more narrow. Try mix n’ matching it up by purchasing a solid coloured top, and printed bottoms. What’s off limits? Any suit that is strapless, or has a triangular cut top.
Try mixing & matching Old Navy’s Ruffled Bandeau in Coral, $17.50, with their String Bikini Bottoms in Coral Paisley, $14.
Larger bust
For those with a more voluptuous upper-half, a bathing suit with underwire cups will provide more support. You can also distract away from your bust by modeling flirty bottoms, like ones with ruffles or frills. A halter style with a wide strap will also emphasize your shoulders and keep those bosoms fastened securely in place. If you want to play down their appearance (no shame to those of us who don’t!) then seek out a monochromatic suit in a darker hue.
Create balance with American Eagle’s Ruffled Halter Bikini Top and String Bikini Bottom in Pink, each priced at $24.50.
Petite bust
Truth be told, those with a shapely upper-half aren’t the only gals who struggle to find ideal beachwear. Padded suits are harder to find than you’d think! For those of us who’ve been blessed with pint-sized breasts, scout out a string bikini to give your chest an extra boost. If you have a small bust and larger buttocks, a bikini may not be the best option. Sometimes a lack of material will draw attention to your bottom. The solution? Steer clear of boy shorts and model a suit with a detailed bust line instead.

Fuller tummy
Similar to wearing vertical stripes to lengthen broad shoulders, straight lines will slim out a fuller stomach. If you want to sport a two-piece, opt for a dark coloured suit with a high waistband – this will reduce any unwanted bulges from making an appearance. As a final tip, avoid swimwear that sinks into your stomach or bottoms that are decorated in bows; they will only attract attention instead of drawing away from it.
