Coping Strategies for Dating a Sports Addict

Does the guy you’re dating begin to pace nervously an hour or two before a hockey game? Does he throw a fit if he can’t find his lucky football hat or shirt? Does he sink into a trance before the television whenever soccer is on, sporadically breaking into screaming, jumping up and down, or cheering? If so, you may be dating a sports addict. And if you are dating a sports addict, this can be trying at times. Whether it’s football, hockey, or some other sport (probably not figure skating, not a lot of guys are hooked on this), there may be times when your patience wears thin. You may love sports, too, or at least like them, or maybe you don’t know or care the slightest thing about sports. But if the guy you’re dating is a definite sports addict, there are some coping strategies out there to help you deal. See below.

Watch the game with him.
This is the simplest and easiest coping strategy if you are dating a game addict. Find out what time the next game is, invite him over, have some snacks and settle in. Don’t be afraid to ask questions if you need to, but keep in mind he might not want constant questions if he is concentrating on his game. Most guys will appreciate your effort to take part in their addiction, but let him enjoy it, too.

Learn about the game.
Take some time to learn about the game yourself. If you’re already a fan you can skip this strategy, but if you don’t know much about football, hockey, soccer or whatever his addiction is, take the time to do a little research. Some games have complex rules that you’ll benefit from taking the time to learn about. And your guy will really appreciate you taking such an interest in his favorite sport.

Pick a team.
Pick your own favorite team and start rooting for them! This can be fun, especially if you can get a friendly rivalry going with your favorite sports addict (your guy). Learn some statistics about your team, purchase a team shirt or hat to wear during the games. To take this a step further, pick a favorite player and learn all about him, too. Guys love to throw around statistics of their favorite player.

Throw a party.
Throw a party for your sports addict and his friends on the day of the big game. Serve fun foods (pizza, wings, burgers, etc.) as well as beer and other drinks. If the other sports addicts are bringing dates who are not so enthusiastic about the game, set aside another room for watching (non-sports) movies, playing board games, or just sipping wine and hanging out. The sports addicts will appreciate being able to enjoy their game while knowing the person they are dating is also having a good time.

Buy some tickets.
If you find watching sports on television tedious, why not purchase some tickets to your addict’s favorite game? Sometimes seeing the game live can be a lot more fun then sitting before a TV. You may find yourself getting caught up in the excitement of the game and the crowd, and your addict will certainly think he is dating the most fabulous girl in the world. So try it!

Completely agree with all of your stretegies, and am also looking to join an Armchair Athlete Widow support group in the Toronto area 🙂 Meantime, what do I do about the little voice in my head that wonders if he would go to these lengths to understand MY obsessions?
