Zooey Deschanel and Ben Gibbard Announce Their Separation

Add another couple to the week’s casualties: after two years of marriage, Zooey Deschanel and musician Ben Gibbard have officially announced their separation.

After the actress’ publicist confirmed the news to Us Weekly yesterday, a source went on to reveal that the split was “mutual and amicable” and that “there was no third party involved”. (Which, of course, is always nice to know.)

The two tied the knot in September 2009 after being introduced by their shared manager a year before that, and according to a recent interview with New York magazine, the Death Cab For Cutie frontman was smitten from the start.

“I’d seen her movies and obviously I thought she was beautiful,” he said. “I was awestruck that she was even talking to me.” Though he eventually took on the role of “the gatekeeper”:

“Every once in a while, there’s a guy that tries to be charming and goofy,” the musician indulged. “I’m just kind of like, ‘I’m going to wait this out and make sure it doesn’t get inappropriate.”

But despite the “yikes” factor of the above revelation, we can all tip our hats to two people who managed to stay married longer than 24 hours. And with such busy work schedules between the two of them, we can also likely chalk up their split to the result of touring, filming and all that comes with it. Let’s hope, anyway.
