Avoid Holiday Weight Gain

With the holidays come yummy treats, delicious drinks, lots of dinner parties, and the dreaded weight gain.

Here’s how to make sure you can fit into that sexy party dress come New Years Eve.

1. Never go to a party hungry
Maybe you didn’t have time to eat, because you were too busy getting ready. Or maybe you were so excited to eat a delicious meal, that you’ve starved yourself all day so you can fully enjoy it. Bad idea! Going to a dinner party on an empty stomach will cause you to overeat, resulting in added pounds. Eat a small, nutritious snack beforehand to avoid binge eating.

2. Watch your portions
Rather than deplete yourself of your favourite holiday foods, simply eat them in moderation. Proper portion size is key when it comes to avoiding that holiday weight gain. Those delicious looking hors d’oeuvres? Limit yourself to two, max. Dessert? Opt for a small scoop of that trifle. And when it comes to your dinner plate, try to fill half of it with veggies, a quarter with protein, and leave the final quarter for samples of those rich, indulgent dishes.

Quick tip: Eat slowly “ you’ll really be able to appreciate your food, and you’ll feel fuller, faster.

3. Opt for lower-calorie festive treats
Got a sweet tooth? Satisfy your cravings with healthy versions of holiday treats. Our favourites include Starbucks Peppermint Brownie Cake Pops (170 calories) and President’s Choice Mini Chocolate Coated Candy Cane Cheesecakes (240 calories for three).

4. Be weary of your alcohol intake
Sugary alcohol calories can lead to excessive weight gain during the holidays because they contain empty calories, and can increase your appetite. Stick to light beer or wine, and low-calorie drinks, such as a vodka soda with a twist of lime.

5. Keep moving
Lack of physical activity is one of major causes of those extra pounds. Try to schedule some time for exercise everyday, even if it’s only for 10-15 minutes. Don’t use the cold weather or the lack of time as an excuse to not work out!

Here are a few ideas to keep you active:

–       Go for a lunchtime walk

–       Take the stairs

–       Participate in winter sports, such as skiing or snowboarding

–       Go ice skating with friends

–       Shovel snow

–       Hot yoga (it will definitely keep you warm)

–       And yes, sex counts too!
