With New York Fashion Week upon us, few careers seem more glamorous than that of the jet-setting lifestyles of designers, journalists, makeup artists or publicity representatives. But like most seemingly lucrative positions, there are some key points to ponder before delving into the best fashion jobs “ so here’s what you need to know.
Fashion Designer
Fewer industries are as competitive as the fashion world, so if you’re hoping to channel your inner Rodarte, it’s wise to involve yourself in the fashion community, whether it be through internships, apprenticeships or even job shadowing. However, what’s most important is that you practice your craft: by consistently making your own designs and using outlets like artisan fairs and independent shops to showcase your work, you can build a following while improving upon yourself. Just make sure you’re willing to put in the time, money and long hours at the drawing board.
Fashion Journalist
Thanks to The Devil Wears Prada and even The September Issue, the image of a fashion journalist is draped in glamour and mystique “ while in reality, fashion journalists (though they do attend shows, speak to designers and cover events) must also spend nights tied to their laptop getting copy in before deadline. Luckily, if you’re willing to work hard, you’re in the right industry “ especially since journalism in any form is relatively competitive. Just begin by writing for any outlets you can, interning where possible and pitch to every website and magazine you can think of.
Public Relations Associate

However, with great spotlight comes great responsibility: especially since public relations associates often find themselves on the schedules of others, working to represent their client in way that’s both flattering to their firm and to the designer or artist. What you need to do? Consider a post-graduate diploma, then seek out internships. Most companies require work experience for associates to be hired on, and while those shifts can be long and challenging, a job well done can result in an exciting position.
Makeup Artist
Since most of us abide by a strict beauty regimen, the appeal of treating models to your own makeup skills can seem like a dream job. And while makeup artists are often treated to working with famous models, designers, actors and musicians, their day begins early and ends even later. However, if makeup means more to you than just applying it to yourself, enroll in a college program and pursue “ you guessed it “ an apprenticeship. To earn clients, you must prove yourself, and by working closely with the industry’s top artists, you’ll not only learn a valuable set of skills but increase your list of contacts.
