Gilmore Girls, Season 1, Episode 4 Recap: The Deer Hunters

This episode originally aired on October 26, 2000 on The WB

The episode starts with Rory waking up to find herself late for a test at Chilton. Lorelai assures her they will make it on time but then runs back inside to change her shoes, causing more delay. The stress of adjusting to the academic demands of Chilton is clearly taking its toll on Rory. She has a major English test on Shakespeare, and she is determined to get an A to make up for her previously poor grade.

On the drive to Chilton, Rory’s determination is interrupted when a deer hits their car, further delaying their arrival. Once they finally reach the school, the teacher does not allow Rory to take the test, leaving her frustrated and defeated.

Lorelai, being her usual protective self, storms into Headmaster Charleston’s office to defend Rory but fails to change the decision. This only serves to embarrass Rory further.

Meanwhile, in Stars Hollow, there’s drama unfolding at the Independence Inn. Sookie is upset about a review that praised the inn but criticized her risotto. Determined to find out who wrote the review, she and Lorelai track down the critic. He confirms that he indeed had a second helping, proving Sookie’s point that her risotto was great.

Back at school, Rory’s day continues to unravel. She has an argument with Paris, leading to a rift between the two. Feeling overwhelmed by the day’s events, Rory has an emotional breakdown in front of Max Medina, her English teacher. The two share a moment, setting the stage for Max’s future romantic involvement with Lorelai.

Memorable quotes from the episode:

  • “That critic didn’t even taste my risotto!” – Sookie
  • “Rory, you’re not going to Harvard because you screwed up one test.” – Lorelai
  • “People can live a long time without a brain. Just look at daytime television.” – Paris
