Here are a few ways you can help yourself stay focused on the task at-hand – no matter how boring it is.
Get Organized
The key to staying focused is organization – especially at work. If you have papers scattered all over the place and are staring at a messy workspace, your motivation will decrease, as will your focus and your productivity. It is easy to get distracted when you are surrounded by other things you could be doing. We all have a list of priorities, and sometimes it feels like it's a mile long. The best way to complete each task to the best if your ability is to stop worrying about everything else you have to do. Focus on one thing at a time and you'll be surprised how much you get done. So, start by getting yourself organized and tidy up before beginning your task.
Cut Distractions
As well as the unavoidable distractions of additional work, we often like to add things we aren't aware are hindering our productivity. Whether it’s listening to music, television or flipping through magazines, get rid of any and all possible distractions. Though you might feel as though they calm you down, all they really do is prevent you from focusing on what you need to do. Put all distractions out of sight and out of arm’s reach. With less to focus on, you will be able to give your current task your undivided attention.
Get Some Sleep and Take it Easy on the Coffee
Coffee is a stimulant and while it may give you a sudden burst of energy, it also makes you edgier and more anxious. One coffee can help keep you alert, but too much caffeine can be the worst thing for you when you’re trying to focus on something. This goes for too many energy drinks or diet pop as well. Try getting enough sleep every night instead of self-medicating in the morning just so you can stay awake throughout the work day. Guaranteed, you will be able to focus your attention on the task at hand rather than how heavy your eye lids feel.
Give Yourself a Break
Every once in awhile you need to take a breather. It may seems counter productive, but taking a minute away before coming back can give you a fresh perspecitve on what you are doing. No matter how quickly you’d like to finish something, remember that it’s worth it to take a little longer to complete your task with scheduled breaks in between. Every 30 minutes, allow yourself a five-minute break. Let your mind wander and relax. In the end, it will make your more productive and keep you from becoming overly bored with your task.
