Top Five Runway Predictions For Spring 2011

Here’s what you need to know to stay on top of fashion trends this season and update your wardrobe accordingly. It’s going to be an exciting season in the world of fashion, with great variety, depth, and styles which are complete contradictions yet flow together perfectly (such as bright colours versus the starkness of pure white).

1970s

Fashion likes to borrow from various decades and give classic styles a modern spin. The colourful and quirky 1970’s are back for 2011. Expect to see bohemian chic styles, the return of the maxi dress for yet another season, high-waisted and wide-leg trousers on the runway, platforms on stylishly manicured feet, and bold prints on dresses and tops.

Longer Skirts

While shorter hemlines may have been more popular last year, midi skirts (mid-length) have appeared on spring runways. Flowing, comfortable for both warmer days and chiller evenings, and easy to accessorize for either a casual workday or a formal night out, midis are a happy medium between maxi dresses and short party frocks.

Neon Brights

Whether you prefer highlighter orange, fluorescent pink, or dazzling electric blue, bright colours are in this spring, in keeping with both the 1970’s trend and a need for brightness after another long Canadian winter. Evening wear and everyday outfits, along with accessories and beauty looks, will be brightly coloured as the world of fashion prepares for a rainbow explosion.

Pure Whites

For those of you who prefer a toned-down and simplistic approach to your colour scheme, striking white is also predicted to be huge for spring. Unlike previous seasons, all-white outfits are now considered trendy and daring. This may be the time to whip out your favourite white skinny jeans and create a chic new look! Avoiding white footwear with an all-white ensemble is probably best, though. A pair of fun springtime heels with a white midi skirt and white lace blouse might be a great look however. Tailored white pants, white button-down tops, white jackets with crisp collars, and tops in every possible shade of the hue from cream to snow are all officially fashion-forward.

Kimono-Style Jackets

Asian-inspired style creates a multicultural esthetic, which is both classy and yet sweet. Unlike the traditional Japanese kimono, the haute couture pieces (such as Louis Vuitton’s high-cut kimono dress from the Spring/Summer 2011 collection) feature draping, artistic touches, and funky colours.

These fashion predictions sound great. I can’t wait to try and experiment with trying out different outfits that portray more of a white hue and, of course, the kimono jackets. I love all different kinds of asian-inspired clothing. I’m glad they’re going to be appearing more in style this year. That’s great news! 🙂
