Navajo Prints: How to Wear Them

Is your monochromatic wardrobe crying out for some colour?

Our remedy: the Navajo print trend. Here’s how to incorporate this ethnic-inspired style into your closet and wear it with confidence.

The Cultured Catwalks

After months of dark and dreary winter, there’s nothing more inspiring than seeing vibrant colour and pattern in our near future. From Paris to New York, tribal-influenced prints were all over the runways.

The king of downtown cool, Marc Jacobs, showed the geometric, colourful print on everything from jumpers to shoulder bags in his ready-to-wear collection.

More classic and work appropriate Navajo-inspired designs were seen at French design house Givenchy. A black and off-white geometric pantsuit was the pié¨ce de ré©sistance “ a standout amongst the textbook suit designs.

Navajo Dos and Don’ts

The Dries Van Noten runway taught us the most important rule in pulling off this trend: keep your pattern mixing to two pieces, max.

This designer combined contrasting tribal fabrics but always added in black and white staple pieces to balance the ensemble. That’s the best part about the Navajo trend – you won’t have to part with ways with your muted, winter wardrobe. This print looks best when it pops against a neutral palette.

Too much pattern in one outfit makes for a busy, unpolished look.

Wearing Navajo for Spring

With sunshine and warm weather being just around the corner, easygoing weekend wear is on our must-have list. And this is where the Navajo print comes in: a tribal vest paired with a cami tucked into skinny jeans is the perfect to-go outfit. Add a pair of brown leather sandals and a stack of mixed bangles for a more folky vibe”this look has been spotted on lots of fashionistas.

Accessories are another easy way to integrate the Navajo prints into your style. Try a bright headscarf for days at the beach or a printed belt on a simple pair of black slacks. Feeling a bit adventurous? Make a big statement in Navajo print with a hooded cape or cloak. Be sure to keep everything else simple (think natural makeup and hair with a classic black dress) to make this a striking look.
