How to Pull Off the Sporty Trend

Tips to be the MVP of the athletic trend

The sporty trend rocked a lot of runways this spring, but adapting this trend farther than your go-to yoga pants without breaking a sweat is easier than it looks. From Altuzarra and Alexander Wang to Rag & Bone, NYFW favourites were all in the running for athlete-of-the-season. This season, the sporty trend focuses on a sleek, minimalist look with attention to functional details – all without looking like you’re going to or from the gym.

This trend is inspired by athletics, but don’t leave the house in head-to-toe gym gear. The key element to pulling off this trend is keeping it polished, and those trusty gym-sweats likely won’t do the trick.

Incorporate sporty fabrics into your day-to-day. Try pairing a neoprene tank with billowy pair of jersey-knit pants. Ramp up the look with a wedge sandal.

Mesh cutout panels in tops keep a pencil skirt looking casual, and add a plain pair of canvas sneakers in a coordinating colour to keep it low-key.

Try to focus on colour choices. Going sporty is a great way to test the colour-blocking waters with neons and pastels. Royal blue, black and white work well, or mix-up shades of grey with bright neons like yellow and pink.

Simple shapes work better. Remember, the idea is to not commit head to toe. Racerbacks, a-lines, and boxy tops bring this look together. No frills necessary.

Elements like exposed zippers and asymmetrical panels give otherwise girly dresses a sporty side. Try a sporty windbreaker or rain jacket over a girly dress on a cooler day, or for night strolls.

And finally, swap your purse for a canvas backpack or gym bag.
