Spring Fashion Trends: Pastels

Going hand-in-hand with spring’s affinity for delicate, feminine styles, pastels rank the highest on spring fashion trends to adopt, and to help you make the most of this must-wear look, here’s our tips on wearing pastels.

1. Coloured jeans
Coloured jeans this season see bright, vibrant colours, but to help embrace two spring fashion trends, choose denim in a pastel hue. Designers like Elizabeth James showcased cropped skinny jeans in sorbet tones and pastel pink, and paired with a crisp, white button-up, you can create a business casual look with two staple pieces. American Apparel and Gap have also offer a variety of tones, and worn with sheer blouses or even plain neutral tanks, you can stay cool and collected as temperatures rise.

2. Sheer button-ups
While you might hesitate in embracing anything sheer, complementing a pistachio sheer button-up with a white or black camisole will help make your style office-appropriate. While fall and winter saw sheer looks in dark neutrals, spring fashion trends call for light colours to keep your aesthetic light and airy. Just remember to balance oversize button-ups with cigarette pants or pleated shorts: A-line skirts and wide-legged pants can create size that doesn’t exist.

3. Silk dresses
The 1920s are the season’s biggest spring fashion trend, so channel your inner Great Gatsby with knee-length silk dresses for nights on the town. And while slip dresses are more spring 2011 than they are 2012, flapper styles with beaded and feathered embellishments will help combine this season’s modernity with the look of the prohibition era. However, to keep this spring fashion trend on the airier side, avoid heavy jackets and stick to light neutrals in outerwear like creams and beige.

4. Shoes
You’ll see certain spring fashion trends manifest in footwear, and pastels this year are no exception. However, be careful not to mix pastel shoes with dark-coloured clothing so that you can stay balanced. For a casual vibe, opt for canvas shoes or pastel-toned oxfords, while for a dressier look, opt for ˜20s-inspired ankle strap heels.
