How to Accessorize a Shift Dress

This season’s sheath dresses are like blank canvases: On their own, they can be a bit plain. However, with a little creativity, you can turn your sheath dress into a wearable masterpiece worthy of endless compliments! To get you started, here are a few ideas.

Jewelry
For a classic, Michelle Obama-inspired look, wear your sheath with a strand of pearls. For something a little more modern, try a chunky, gold necklace, bracelet or watch. If you’re planning on wearing your sheath to a holiday cocktail party, don’t be afraid to go all out! A sheath dress is the perfect opportunity to show off that oversized, jewel-encrusted statement necklace. Or, for something a little more elegant, pull your hair up and put on a pair of dazzling chandelier earrings.

Shoes
Black, closed-toe pumps never fail with a simple sheath dress. Black flats, not as sexy, can also be worn for a more casual look. However, if you’re looking wearing your sheath dress to a glitzy gala affair, try a sassy pair of heels with sequins, rhinestones, bows or any other embellishments. Just be careful not to go overboard with too much bling.

Belt
Didn’t think your sheath dress could be any more figure flattering? Try adding a skinny belt just above your hips. Wearing a belt that is the same colour as your dress (such as black on black or beige on beige) is always work-appropriate; However, for a night out with the girls, try adding a brightly-hued belt to your black sheath. This will add a pop of colour and bring attention to your cinched waistline.

Layering
If your sheath dress has a pattern or design, try wearing a unbuttoned cardigan that matches one of the colours in your dress. However, make sure to wear a hip-length cardigan as opposed to anything cropped or shrunken, which can look ill-fitted and unflattering. You can also try layering a white tee or button-up underneath your sheath for a polished look. Also, if you’re a layering expert, try turning your sheath into a skirt by adding a shirt, jacket and scarf over top.

Tights

While pantyhose can look downright granny-ish with a sheath dress, they don’t have to. To keep your look modern, make sure your tights are opaque as opposed to solid. Also, for a sexier look try lace-inspired legwear or crimson-coloured tights for something festive.
