Fall Is Fab With The Mod Dress

The fabulous retro mod dress is back in fashion for fall. The mod dress is known for its simple shift style, short and kicky. The Mod fashion’s Peter Pan collars, drop-waist shifts, and double-breasted coats are back. Celebrities such as Michelle Williams, Hailee Steinfeld, Sienna Miller and Rachel Zoe are sporting this cool retro style with flair. Burberry, Calvin Klein, Yves Saint Laurent and Prada showed the new version of the mod look on the runway for fall.

The mod dress comes from the Mod Fashion sense in the 60’s. Mod translates to modern, a new and exciting look that took the fashion world by storm. Twiggy made this mod dress style famous in the 60’s along with other 60’s iconic styles. Mod fashions used tailored designs, much inspired from England, bright colors, and short revealing dress lengths. Mod Fashion was taking place at the same time as the Hippie movement. Whereas the Hippie clothing style was earthy, loose and freeing, the mod look took direction from British fashion creating a totally different look that was bright and modern looking.

This fall’s mod dress look embodies the same style but many use quieter muted colors and neutrals, while some continue to channel the bold colors of the 60’s. These short dresses can be short sleeved or sleeveless, with design or complimentary colors. The new pixie haircut fits perfectly with the revamp of mod style dresses for fall 2011 and recalls the Mary Quant bob cut so famous when mod was in. Mod makeup creates the total look, the doe-eyed mod makeup consists of wingged eyeliner, thick mascaraed lashes or fake lashes, pale colored skin and pale colored lips, a look that fits right in with the fall/winter nude/neutral and smokey eye makeup trends. The stark white lid of the eyes can be replaced with softer neutrals and pinks with eyeliner drawn from the inner corner of the eye to a pointed tip beyond the edge of the eyes.

The mod dress is typically A-line, this season the mod dress can be seen not only as it was in the 60’s with flats and bobbed hairdo’s but this updated version is fab with matching coats or neutral toned pumps. A vintage-inspired satchel purse pairs well with a mod dress. A-line mod style coatdresses were also part of these designer’s collections. Mod dresses and coatdresses look fantastic accessorized with stiletto, stacked, or wedge heels with tasseled finishes. Boots and wedges are also being paired with these all purpose short dresses. Karl Lagerfeld’s wild Flashlight pumps might just set off one of the bright neon colored mod dresses from the runway.
