DNR Trends: The 2011 Trends Not To Revive

It’s a new season. And now that warm weather has validated the closet clean out, you’re likely considering bringing back certain 2011 trends. But before you do, we’ve gone through the worst must-do looks of 2011 so we can tell you what not to revive. (And even if they’re not that bad, they’re still not coming back for a reason.)

1. MC Hammer pants
And here comes the inevitable pun: don’t touch them. While the parachute pants had a place in spring 2011, there’s no reason to revive the homage to circa ’91 rappers. Unflattering and unforgiving, swap these for a pair of wide-legged ˜20s-inspried pants that you can pair with a button-up or loose-fitting tucked in tank for a prohibition-era look. MC Hammer wasn’t a fashion god for a reason.

2. Black lipstick
There’s a place for dramatic in 2012, but with the gothic trend easing out, it’s time to bid adieu to black lipstick. Vampy and over-the-top, its wearability is limited to costume parties and nights out at industrial nights “ as opposed to this season’s burgundy and red lipsticks that work with either the ultra feminine or gentleman-chic. Not everybody can be Zola Jesus.

3. Jeggings
Finally “ finally “ jeggings have fallen by the wayside. And despite the temptation to bring them back for spring (yet again), jeggings are one of the first things to send to the thrift store. But are skinny jeans out? Quite the opposite: with streamlined, structured fashion keeping a place in spring 2012, skinny coloured denim is perfect for a fresh new season. Just keep the spandex to your workout gear.

4. Capes
Capes seemed like the perfect way to help ease into jacket weather, but since ˜50s trends and prohibition-era fashion is 2012’s must-have, these early ˜60s staples have been phased out. Instead, stand by your blazer or embrace a structured trench. Since dresses and pants maintain a flowy, billowy vibe, you’ll want to keep them balanced by sharp-looking outerwear.
