Is Being in a Relationship Hurting Your Health?

We know that being in love and partnered for life keeps us happy, less stressed and helps us to live longer.

But does it help us to live better?

In some ways, being one half of a couple can actually negatively impact your health and wellbeing.

Here’s how his habits may be bringing you down:

You’re pigging out

You may be unconsciously eating more now that you have a dinner companion with a healthy appetite. If he’s eating six slices of pizza, four may seem reasonable to you, whereas two may have been your single-girl your limit. Nip this in the bud before your tight jeans get a little too tight.

You’re getting less sleep

Whether you’re waiting for him to get off of his nightshift or staying up cuddling on the couch together, the lack of sleep can take its toll on your health. You don’t always have to turn in together. Make it a rule that you get to bed early at least a few nights a week, whether he joins you or not.

You’re making poor food choices

Between date nights and your regular takeout habit, the meals you share aren’t always the healthiest. Since homemade meals are more nutritious than what you’ll get out, stay in a few nights a week and cook a meal together “ you’ll both benefit.

You’re watching too much television

He’s king of the couch and master of the remote, and you’re his eternal sidekick. It’s not that television is necessarily unhealthy on its own, but if it’s consistently replacing your regular workouts or keeping you up later than usual, your health will suffer.

Convince him to join you at the gym, or suggest a post-dinner stroll to help digest and spend quality time together without zoning out in front of the tv.

You’re drinking more

This one goes hand in hand with eating more “ as a rule, guys can consume more of anything than we can, booze included, and we tend to get carried along when we’re with them. Excessive drinking increases a woman’s risk for disease, can add extra pounds and lead to other unhealthy choices (like drunken midnight poutine runs and sleeping off the hangover all of the following day).

Pace yourself when you’re out together “ try ordering a diet soda or sparkling water with lime for every other drink.

You’re having unprotected sex

Some guys have an aversion to condoms, which can spell trouble for you. Unless you are in a trusting, monogamous relationship and are using a reliable form of birth control like the pill, this is one habit he’ll have to lose if he wants to be with you.

Did your health take a nosedive when you coupled up, or have you gotten healthier? Share your story with us.

I love how every other thing mentioned in this article pertains to weight.
No wonder there are so many unhappy women out there!
Gee are you eating to much??
Sleeping in instead of exercising? drinking will make you gain weight!
    no shit.
I think that if being with someone causes you to be happy and relax and feel comfortable in your own skin than good for you! Doesn’t mean your going to turn into the good year blimp. There are alot of bigger problems out there than staying up late to be with your man or enjoying a few extra peices of pizza once in a while.
Maybe someone should write an article about the guy who makes his girlfriend feel like crap because she didn’t go to the gym or wants to eat an extra slice.
Ridiculous. as for unprotected sex anyone with a brain knows that’s a stupid idea.

Why is it always the guy’s fault? Is he is too much of this or that crap. Why can’t you do an article where is she doing this or that? Same old stereotypes written by scorned women writers.
