Signs Your Product Is Past Its Prime

You know that mascara you got as a free sample a few months ago that you’ve been dying to try, but just haven’t found the right occasion? Or maybe you’ve held onto a liquid eyeliner product for months because they don’t make your favourite kind anymore? Regardless of the excuse, there comes a time when a product is past its prime.

You could have a really good reason for holding onto a beauty product, but that doesn’t necessarily make it’s a good one. Don’t be afraid to clean out your makeup bag, it’ll help your skin, nails, eyes, and everything else in the long run! Here’s a list of signs your favourite, or not-so-favourite products need to be tossed out:

It smells funky:
This is not a good sign “ for anything “ let alone makeup. When it comes to your beauty products smelling bad, there’s really only one solution: throw it out! Perfume and fragrances are normally the first things to go. A little fragrance fading isn’t the end of the world, but if your spritz starts to smell rancid or sour, it’s time to part ways.

The texture changes:
Makeup comes a certain way for a reason. The changes can be little, but the impact is much bigger. If your moisturizer looks exceptionally thick, or thins out beyond belief, it’s a sign the product has aged or is damaged beyond repair. When the texture of your moisturizer changes, it normally means the oil-and-water-soluble chemicals are separating “ meaning it may not be able to perform its job anymore.

The colour is off:
Product colours are highly sensitive to light, so it’s not the end of the world if the colour of something changes slightly. It’s when your red shade of lipstick changes to a pumpkin orange, then you’ve got a problem.

It grows a fuzzy layer:
This one just speaks for itself. Black spots or fuzz can signal bacteria, which can lead to an infection if you continue to use the product. If there’s growth where there shouldn’t be, throw out the product immediately!

My problem isn’t hoarding, it’s the waste! If I’m going to spurge on $40 mascara (hello DiorShow) but it starts degrading the minute the wand hits open air, how can I keep up? Would love some tips on the ‘longest-life’ beauty products.
