UGHHHHHHHHH, everyone. UGH. No. Not after Christmas. Not after two days of bliss and gorging and doing nothing. I refuse to participate. What's that? I already am? Ah, well okay, here we go.
Joan Rivers has vowed to keep "fighting" Jennifer Lawrence. (I know! Why do you think that "UGH" was so loud? You trumped mine with yours, didn't you? Of course you did. This is the most annoying thing in the world already. But whatever: we're in this together, now.)
Anywho.
According to NY Mag (and to take a trip down memory lane), Jennifer Lawrence previously stated that "shows like Fashion Police [show] generations of young people to judge people based on all the wrong values and that it's okay to point at people and call them ugly or fat."
Then, Joan Rivers responded that she loves "that she's telling everyone about how wrong it is to worry about retouching and body image, and meanwhile, she has been touched up more than a choir boy at the Vatican. Look at her posters. She doesn't have a nose, she has two holes. She has to learn, don't talk if you're doing it."
I'm not even going to begin to say what's wrong with that statement. Why? Because I'm still full of shortbread and Christmas spirit, and getting into why using a tragic incident of sexual assault at the hands of powerful men as joke about retouching isn't how I want to spend my December 27th.
So then:
"My New Year's resolution is [ensuring] Jennifer Lawrence grows up and realizes how lucky she is and calms down," vowed Rivers.
And cue the UGHHHH once again. Like, we get it: J-Law is calling bullshit on aspects of the industry that yes, people benefit from (like actresses, who get touched up on magazine covers), but ultimately, more people suffer because of that touching up (like young girls, who think they need to look a certain way). May I also remind Ms. Rivers (because I know she's reading this, obviously) that Jennifer Lawrence is now campaigning once again for an Oscar, considering American Hustle has probably guaranteed her at least another nomination. Thus, it's not like she made these comments in March or May when everything's died down: Jennifer Lawrence is speaking out during a crucial time for actors (one where they want to earn support and recognition), which proves just how little she really does or did need the Fashion Police — or how little she cares about that particular hierarchy.
So keep your eyes on your own paper, Joan Rivers. You were a stand-up comedian — you know what it's like to go against the grain and to speak your mind.
