Everybody be quiet, the Queen (literally) has spoken.
In an interview with The Wrap, Helen Mirren sounded off about ageism in Hollywood, piggybacking on the remarks made by Maggie Gyllenhaal last month, when the actress said she was considered too old to play the lover of a man in his mid-50s.
“It’s fucking outrageous,” Mirren said. “It’s ridiculous, honestly. It’s so annoying and ’twas ever thus. You know, we all sat there watching as James Bond got more and more geriatric and his girlfriends got younger and younger. So annoying.”
PREACH.
As for how to maintain the same level of confidence as Mirren? Be exactly as scared as she says she is.
“I’m frightened all the time, of everything, really,” she said. “The point is not to be afraid of the fact that you’re afraid. You get on with it.”
“Never be afraid of fear,” Mirren continued, remembering the advice a nun gave at her former school. “The most dangerous thing is fear itself. That’s something I’ve held with me all my life. Don’t be foolish, but don’t be afraid of fear.”
Helen Mirren, if you can read this: please just follow me around and give me advice.
