The 5 Coolest Hair Cut And Colour Trends For Fall 2023

By Alison McGill

Summer ends this Saturday which means it’s time to pack away your sundresses and sandals, bring out the cashmere and tweeds, and book a fall hair tune-up to put you in step for autumn.

This is the season when things typically go darker and a little bolder with hair colour, while cuts are sharper and shapelier than the long and languid styles of summer. Here’s what is trending for the season ahead, a quintet of dramatic and bold statement fall hair looks we love.

The Italian Bob

This is the classic cut with a sexy European edge. Hair has a soft silhouette, movement, and just the right amount of tousled texture and volume. It can be worn with or without bangs, but the key is to keep the fringe soft and alluring. Another key feature of the Italian bob is a deep side part (yes, they are still chic!). White Lotus star Simona Tobasco rocks the style so beautifully—let her be your ultimate style inspo. Bellissima!

The Modern Shag

Everyone’s favourite goth Jenna Ortega has been rocking the shag cut for a few months and it’s a rockstar way to refresh longer lengths. “The new shag sits below the collarbone with longer layers and fringe which sits a little heavier and longer,” says Marilisa, creative director for Marc Anthony. “To style, rough dry hair halfway, then use a round bristle brush to smooth the cuticle and add some movement into the ends of hair.” Use a curl defining lotion to control frizz and when hair is dry, shake it out with a cool shot to break it up and give a messy finish.”

Vibrant reds and coppers continue to be huge this season—going red is the ultimate fall hair moment. “I am seeing more and more clients feeling confident requesting red,” says Jed Puznak, co-owner of Toronto’s Alcorn Hair. “Nicole Kidman who has been blonde for so long has returned to her strawberry roots. This is a great time to switch up and try something bold with fall hair colour because your locks are healthier from less heat styling in the summer.” Consult with your colourist to determine the perfect red for you. Dare we say it, but once you’ve gone red, you won’t go back. It’s a whole mood and it’s addictive.

Texture Play

Letting your curls shine is something we love to see. Natural hair texture is a beautiful thing and for fall hair Marilisa says the best curly cuts sit just past the shoulders with longer layers. “The front pieces are fun to play with and should end anywhere from eye level to cheekbones,” she shares. Black-ish star Yara Shahidi rocks the curly cut of the moment, and her hair always looks pretty, polished, and effortless.

Unconventional Hues

According to Puznak, this is a season of experimental colour with statement shades like pink and creamsicle being a chic choice. At the MTV VMA’s last week Columbian singer and award winner Karol G rocked long blonde-and-pink ombré hair which were a statement hair moment. Florence Pugh has also been making headlines wearing her pixie in a variety of pastel shades this summer. We love how Florence matches her outfit to her hair and takes risks; it feels incredibly modern and fashion-forward.
