Summer Beach Bag Beauty Essentials

If you’re lucky enough to be heading on a beach vacation (or, sigh, simply frequenting the local beach in your city), there are essential beach bag beauty products not to leave home without! Whether you’re playing volleyball in the Hamptons, surfing in Phuket Island or living la vida bonita in Miami, the right beauty products will make the world of difference in the sun, surf and sand.

Along with your favourite magazines and Ipod, below is beach-approved beauty loot to stash in your tote for a day in the sun.

Sunscreen: If you take nothing else with you do not forget this most important essential! Not only is it imperative to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays, but let’s face it: lobster-pink skin is not the most attractive. The amount of SPF you choose should depend on your skin type (i.e. how easily your burn), as well as any activities you plan on doing. For instance, if you know you’ll be breaking a sweat playing sports, you will probably want to choose a sport formulation with a higher SPF that is also sweat-proof and waterproof. Remember to reapply sunscreen throughout the day, especially after swimming or any strenuous activity. Also remember to select a separate sunscreen for your face (a moisturizer with a built-in SPF is great), as some body formulas can be oily.

Lip Balm: Every beach bag needs a good lip balm, especially one containing an SPF. When looking for a lip balm that will hold-up in the sun, select a solid formula in a tube that won’t become a goopy mess in the heat.

Leave-In Conditioner: Hair, just like your skin, can also dry-out and become damaged in the sun if not protected. Using a product like Ouidad’s Sun Shield & Sport Leave-In Spray ($20) provides a protective barrier against the sun, wind and salt. The inclusion of specialized amino acids and proteins help seal-in moisture also.

Blotting Papers: Whether you’re engaging in sports or lying out in the sun, you will undoubtedly be working up a sweat in the blazing heat. To keep oiliness at bay, rather than repeatedly apply a pressed powder, which can look cake-y over time, keep a packet of blotting papers close at hand to rid your face of shine and build-up.

After Sun Treatment: After a long day spent under the sun, replenish your skin’s moisture with a refreshing and soothing cream. A natural product like Korres’ Yoghurt Cooling Gel ($23.50) provides long-lasting freshness and instantly comforts sun-exposed skin.
